Shifting the Power of Climate Action to 156 Cameroonian Municipalities

Small charities are often closest to the impact of climate change, yet furthest from the funding to respond to it.

This month, we hear from MEDIAPRO CAMEROON CO-OPERATIVE, who are putting communities, and children in particular, at the heart of climate action across Cameroon. Here they share how their Climat-Alerte Roadshow is turning tree planting into something that can be seen, tracked and trusted, and how fellow members can get involved.

The shovel and the story, in local hands

At MEDIAPRO CAMEROON COOP-CA, we decided that local communities should hold both the shovel and the story. Led by veteran broadcasters Mr. Joseph Danjie and Mme Rose Mbole Epie, we created the Climat-Alerte Roadshow, a travelling television broadcast and field-action platform that transforms climate adaptation into a proud national movement.

Instead of waiting for top-down mandates, we went straight to the grassroots. We have secured formal partnerships with 156 local host mayors across Cameroon to transfer land custody directly to our youth. Over the next three years, we aim to mobilise 2 million schoolchildren by revitalising 156 school eco-clubs and planting 1 million native trees.

Proving every seedling survives

We knew that to truly shift the power, we had to build trust. That is why we do not just film tree planting; we prove seedling survival on screen and through science. Our cooperative engineered a custom digital tracking matrix alongside polytechnic specialists. Every single tree planted by a student is geolocated and monitored. Survival data is then audited and openly published on our mobile TV broadcasts (Climat-Alerte TV Mag), distributed on our national network (CRTV).

We believe this is Africa's first fully auditable, anti-greenwashing media platform.

Growing our circle of solidarity

As an official UN Accredited Supplier (UNGM #692753) and an institutional member of the UNFCCC PCCB Network, we have built a solid operational framework on the ground. Now, we are looking outward to expand our circle of solidarity. We are sharing our story today because we want to connect with fellow SIDCN members to achieve two goals:

  • Forming an international NGO consortium to apply jointly for climate media and biodiversity adaptation grants.

  • Launching a global crowdfunding campaign to buy nursery tools and seeds directly for our 156 community school eco-clubs.

We are proof that when you empower local youth and back them with transparent science, a single seedling can spark a continental shift. Let's build this future together.

Thank you to MEDIAPRO CAMEROON COOP-CA for sharing their story with the SIDCN community. If you're a member interested in joining a consortium or supporting their crowdfunding campaign, we'd love to help you connect: get in touch with us at admin@sidcn.org.
